I was lucky enough to be a teenager when social media really began to flourish.
Kids these days wont know the joys of bebo, myspace or msn.
Here are some of the things that I remember either loving or that I now find cringe worthy.
MSN:
What is msn you ask? Think of basically what facebook messenger is but it is its own program. You would get to add people based on their email address and you can see who is online by the colour of the little icon next to their name.
I always liked to turn on the option where people could see what music you were listening to. I thought it was the height of technology. It was also a good conversation starter because people would forget it was linked and listen to some weird shit haha.
Also you would put your relationship status in your MSN name:
<3<3<3Sezza&Nick4eva<3<3<3
It would also bring up a notification every time someone new logged on.
So naturally I would log off and log on like three times to get a boys attention.
One of my pet hates was when people would leave their msn logged on and leave the computer and you would try to talk to them! I MEAN JEEZ! CHANGE YOUR ICON TO 'away' or 'brb'.
Also there were secret codes that you could slip into conversation so that if someone was reading it over your shoulder they would know to watch what they were saying.
Once I did the code and my friend was like "HI SARAHS MUM!!!"
Rude.
Staying up late, chatting to your crush. Turning the sound off your computer so your parents can't hear the notifications. aww. I am so tired. But I don't want to stop talking to youuuu.
MYSPACE:
I loved how much you could personalise your page. You could pick what song would play when someone is looking through your stuff. And once again I would purposely pick songs that I knew the guy I was interested in liked. PLAYAAAA.
Also you got to feel like a computer genius because in order to personalise your page you had to edit the HTML crap. If you were able to put a new background on your myspace page AND remove all the ads that automatically appeared, you were the bomb.
One deadly negative thing about myspace was that you could choose your top friends. So naturally it was like the hunger games. Oh? You wanted to make fun of my hair today? You are so not in the top five anymore. Being number one was like being on top of the world. The hurt of looking at your besties page and not being on there anymore. </3 ahahah
Oh and even worse if they changed it so their new boyfriend was ahead of you.
I remember once being so angry with a friend I dragged her to the very end of my friends list. Yep. Harsh I know.
FACEBOOK:
Facebook has come a long way. And everyone whinges everytime they upgrade it. Calm down.
The big thing used to be to make someone part of your family or make a friend your boyfriend haha.
Especially after a breakup because people would be like "look at me I still have friends!".
I also remember people would use their relationship status' as an attack on their partner.
Like after a fight they would change their status to single so that people would message the other person. hahahahah so nasty.
One thing I have a love/hate relationship with is the concept of facebook telling you when someone has read the message you have sent them. SO ANNOYING. I prefer to make up the fact that I am being ignored rather than know it for sure. Thanks.
Who knows what else is to come. I remember feeling special when I first created a hotmail email account. But now everything is too hard to keep up with.
What else is beautiful about the internet is our ability to freely write about anything we want. Here is an opportunity for me to do a little plug for a book that has just come out.

It gives us a chance to look into what it is like to grow up in Australia before my time. I know what it was like in the 90s and thereafter. But being a kid before then was completely different. If you have some time, give it a go.
Enjoy your Sunday and I hope you guys could relate to some of these.
What other things do you guys remember?
xx Sar
