Why it is hard to be a boy
I really had to think hard about this topic. Straining my brain to think of things to write. Put my self in the smelly shoes of boys everywhere. But what I came up with I think is fair and I hope you all agree.
1. Having to make the first move
I know that after the feminist revolution women have the power to do this. But I believe it is still widely expected for guys to make that first move. Approach the random girl in the bar, in front of all her friends, ask her for her number/to buy her a drink/to dance and hope to whatever God you believe in that she doesn't shut you down. That takes guts! Or balls maybe? What if you are shy? Dilemmaaaaaa.
2. The line between well groomed and other people calling you homosexual
It's a tough one. Moisturizer, aftershave, hair products... all make you look great, but how much is too much? It also depends where you are. Rock up to a rural town in Australia in skinny jeans and a chain around your neck and expect a reenactment of the fight scene in Priscilla queen of the desert. But turn up to the Ivy in Sydney in a cowboy hat and a flano and good luck getting in.
3. Male Celebrities
So...you have to compete with Ryan Gosling for your girlfriend's affection? That could be difficult. Just keep in mind that he can afford a personal trainer, makeup artist, hair stylist and someone to follow him around with professional lighting to make sure he looks great all the time. So don't feel too bad. But he made out with Rachel McAdams so I personally wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole. :)
4. Gender stereotypes
Yep. Men have them too. However this stereotype tends to regard the things men shouldn't do. Men shouldn't bake, shouldn't dance ballet, shouldn't be a nurse, shouldn't be vegetarian, shouldn't cry or shouldn't listen to Celine Dion. And especially shouldn't bake a vegetarian lasagna whilst crying and dancing ballet in the kitchen to a Celine Dion song after finishing a night shift in maternity. Big no-no. I mean jeez, do you even lift?
5. Locker rooms
If you have read some of my previous blog posts you would know my views on sports. But all that aside, it can't be easy to be in a locker room situation. Expected to share a view of your manhood with the team. Constant comparisons in the group shower. Uncomfortable much?
So you see, sometimes it can be hard to be a guy. Sure I couldn't think of more than five reasons why... but I am sure there are more reasons out there! So next time you pick on a guy for singing along during the titanic, think about it...
